Google Just Launched Grasshopper, a Smartphone Game to Teach Adults How to Code

Grasshopper

Grasshopper: Google’s effort to teach adults coding

It’s no doubt that with computers being used everywhere in today’s world that computer programming is the highest paid job that is out there today. While many learn computer programming as a way to further their careers others are less inclined to do so and one of the reasons could be, is that it is too complicated. Well, Google wants to change all that with Grasshopper.

For those who want to learn coding and do not know where to start, Google’s Grasshopper seems to be the Launchpad. Moving from one level to the other through programming, Grasshopper tries to build interest in coding through a simple- enough- to- understand- game. There are already a number of games out there for children to encourage them to learn coding but hardly anything for adults. The gaming world, when it comes to coding, seems to be more centered- around children as the target audience rather than adults.

How Grasshopper wants to increase interest in adults to coding?

Product developer for Grasshopper stated time, money and access as some of the main reasons why adults don’t want to learn coding. When you are a child coding may seem a fun activity but as you grow older it just becomes something that you have to study and then you become less inclined to do so.

Time becomes the main barrier to learn coding. With many people having hectic lifestyles, coding becomes a little difficult to fit into the picture. But Google hopes to change all that with Grasshopper. Being in the form of a game, Google hope that adults would be able to fit in learning coding in their breaks or when they come back home and just want to unwind.

What does Grasshopper involve?

Grasshopper does not make you a programming genius overnight but in the hopes of introducing you to the basics of programming, Grasshopper aims to help individuals find out if programming is for them or not.

The game includes learning the fundamentals of JavaScript and also a schedule for very time you wish to play Grasshopper, you can set up a schedule of reminders for everyday or every other day or even none at all.

To complete each puzzle all you have to do is enter code, for every line of code one part of the puzzle is solved. It is as simple as that. Besides this, Grasshopper also includes quizzes that help people in understanding the basic principles of the coding their following.

Grace who is a Grasshopper that helps users along the way, is named after Grace Hopper a computer industry pioneer.

Google is also partnering with Coursera and LaunchCode to help users who feel like coding is for them. Grasshopper, which teaches individuals the basics of JavaScript, would be the first step and then if people like what they are doing and want to learn more, they could sign up with LaunchCode or Coursera as the next option available to them.

Grasshopper will be available on both iOS and Android operating systems.

Apple’s Latest Patent Ensures Your Screen Turns on to the Right Display Brightness

Apple Patent to reduce Display Brightness

Apple files many patents on a yearly basis or maybe even shorter, not that they work on all of these patents, but one of the patents that they have been constantly following up on has to do with a feature that will reduce display brightness. Recently Apple has been granted a patent that has to do with reducing display brightness or luminescence shock. This new patent, details how a device such as the iPhone would react in a dark environment or more specifically how the brightness of a screen would react in such an environment setting.

At present in any device when the lighting in a room changes or more selectively becomes darker, the phone’s screen takes a moment to adjust the brightness of the screen, according to the environment it is in. this temporarily causes something known as a “luminescence shock”.

How will Apple’s patent work to solve display Brightness?

This temporary adjustment of the brightness of the screen to the environment that the phone is being used in can cause damage to the eye. Apple has now come up with a way by which that damage could be reduced or all together eliminated.

According to the patent that has been awarded to Apple, a phone or any other device’s display brightness will be selectively limited depending on the lighting in the environment.

What does the patent to limit display brightness detail?

The tech in question would use the phone’s or device’s ambient light sensor to detect the level of brightness that is required from the display.

At present when you get a call or receive a message, the display takes a moment to adjust causing unwanted display brightness but in this case the phone’s ambient light sensor will detect the lighting in the environment and accordingly adjust the brightness emitting from the screen.

Another aspect of limiting display brightness is that a phone or device could work without an ambient light sensor too. The phone has to automatically reduce brightness whenever a call or message is received. There is no need of an ambient light sensor for this, the display brightness automatically shifts whenever a call or message is received. This too would be effective in reducing luminescence shock.

When was the patent to reduce luminescence shock filed?

Apple has a tendency to file patents on various techs that it is working on and not really following up on them. What I mean by this is that the company takes to filing patents which do not really make their way on to a production line.

But in this case Apple seems to be serious with this patent to reduce display brightness. Apple filed this same patent in 2007 and since then it has followed through with it with the last one being filed in 2016 until the present one. This is something it seems that the company is serious on. Whether this tech will be advertised as a separate feature in up- coming Apple devices or simply just present in future devices is not known at present and another point in mind is that if this tech does find its way on to an Apple product, it could have the potential to reduce battery consumption as well.

Apple New iPad is the Best Tablet for Almost Everybody

iPad 2018: The iPad for the masses!

Apple’s iPads are maybe the most used tablet out there. It appeals to everyone and it gets the job done. Whether you are an adult or a child, whether you use your iPad for work purposes or just for entertainment, an iPad is something everyone can find useful. From the elderly to the young, iPads have become a common device in everyone’s household. While an iPad can be used for just about everything these days, it has become something that everyone can use.

ipad
Apple is now releasing another iPad without any number to follow this time. Coming as just iPad, this iPad has much of the same features as before, with the same size, weight and look to it. But as with everything new, there are a few features here and there that come in addition to the same old features. Otherwise how would you justify bringing in a new model when the old model is just as good.

Same old same old iPad:

Just like previous models, the iPad 2018 looks just like last year’s model. It has the same 2048 by 1536 pixel resolution, the same 9.7 inch display screen, with the same old bezels and the same old touch sensor in the same old place- the home button.

Looking at the physical dimensions, that is also the same 9.4 by 6.6 by .29 and if you’re wondering about the weight, well surprise surprise it’s the same- just over a pound.

Storage in the iPad 2018:

The iPad with no suffix as called by Apple and the iPad 2018 as called by me, is available in 32Gb or if you have a bigger wallet 128 Gb of internal storage. Comparing both models you will not see any noticeable difference, it’s just the same.

Camera in the iPad 2018:

The cameras too have not undergone any change since the last year, with the rear-end camera being an 8Mp camera with a f/2.4 lens and with 1080 HD video recording. The front facing camera in the iPad 2018 has a 1.2Mp camera and a f/2.2 lens with 720 HD video recording.

Other specs in the iPad 2018:

Besides all the other specs, the iPad 2018 also has Wi-Fi and 4.2 Bluteooth connectivity and a choice of 4G LTE cellular radio for use with GSM or CDMA networks.

Coming to the battery the iPad 2018 comes with a 32.4 watt lithium polymer battery that lasts for 10 hours. While the speakers and the home button placement remain all the same in the iPad 2018.

Finally, what’s new in the iPad 2018?

All new iPads come with an upgraded processor, this time around is no different either. The iPad 2018 comes with a A10 Fusion chip which is the same as in the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 plus.

This time, you can use the Apple touch sensitive pen with the iPad 2018, which in the past was only available to the higher end iPad Pro line- up.

Finally the price, the iPad 2018 will come at $329 for the 32Gb model and $429 for the 128 Gb iPad 2018 model. If you want to add LTE to the mix, then add $130 to the bill.

Top Strategies For Marketing Your New App

app
If you’ve spent countless hours developing your own unique app and perfecting it, it can be logically assumed that you want people to download and use it, right?

The problem is, simply designing an app and posting it to the app store doesn’t mean that people will download it. If no one knows it’s there, how can they download it?

This is where marketing comes in, and it’s tough to do because you’re competing with literally hundreds of thousands of other app developers.

So the question is, what strategies can you use to get your app to stand out amongst a crowded field?
Here are the top strategies for marketing your new app:

Achieve Organic Marketing Through A Durable Social Media Presence

A social media presence is 100% necessary in today’s world. Social media increases awareness about your brand, connects you with your audience, and is one of the most powerful communication tools to have ever existed.

On Facebook, for instance, you can gain followers, communicate with them in the comments, and join relevant app groups to spread your message.

Eventually, once you build strong enough of a presence, you can achieve what is called ‘organic marketing,’ or where you can promote yourself simply by having a presence on social media outlets such as Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, and Twitter.

What’s important is that you actually connect with your audience. Don’t just be promotional. Engage with them in the comments section to answer questions and respond to comments. Don’t let your posts and updates feel automated. Rather, write them in your own voice.

Write A Killer Description

The description is often where developers skip over when marketing their app. This is a major mistake, because most people on the fence will read your description before deciding whether to download your app or not.

Your app description needs to accomplish several things, including:
  • It must be of medium length (neither too long nor too short)
  • It must have short paragraphs
  • It must explain the benefits of your app to the user
  • It must be written in an easy-to-understand manner
  • The features of the app should be explained in the form of bullet points
  • It should contain popular keywords
An excellent description is just one thing you can do to optimize your app for the apps tore, which we will talk about next.

Optimize Your App For The App Store

App Store Optimization (ASO) refers to the steps you can take to make your app more visible on the app store. Since the app world is so oversaturated, this is not something you can overlook.

Examples of the steps you can take to optimize your app include:
  • Researching popular keywords and including them in your description
  • Having a unique app name
  • Including screenshots/video tutorial in your description
  • Accumulating many 4-star and 5-star reviews

Reward Your Users

Ultimately, is there no greater marketing technique than simply to develop a loyal fanbase?

Of course, accumulating a base of loyal fans is easier said than done to begin with, but one of the best strategies you can use to make your fans more loyal is simply to reward them.

Send push notifications to those who have already downloaded your app informing them of updates, benefits, contests, and so on.

You can also send people rewards (such as access to paid features on your app for free) on their birthdays or on holidays.

Make More Apps

Finally, you can also gain visibility on the app store by simply creating more apps. You can also direct people who download one app to another through push notifications, links in the app, and internal banners.

The main idea here is that you treat app development like a business. If people are interested in one of your products, and if they like it, then it’s only natural that they should be interested in another as well.
In short, the more apps you create (and the more successful you are at using each of your apps to market the others) the more visibility you will gain.

Marketing Your New App

Developing an app is one thing, but marketing it is a whole different ball game.

Each of the options that I have mentioned today can be put together to build a thorough marketing strategy for your mobile app that does not require large financial outlays. As with all marketing strategies, you will find that each tactic requires a continuous time investment and active monitoring for maximum benefits.

Apple's macOS warning: New alerts tell you you're running incompatible 32-bit apps

MacOS
Apple will be making a transition to the 64-bit technology for the macOS users. They are putting pressure on the developers to update their macOS apps. There will be alerts to inform you that you are running the 32-bit apps that are incompatible.

Apple will display a warning about the incompatibility of the 32-bit app on the latest macOS version. This warning is with regards to the transition to the 64-bit technology.

For all the users on macOS High Sierra 10.13.4, when they open any of the apps whether old or new that run on the 32-bit technology, will get a one-time warning displayed.

The developers will have to update to the 64-bit technology if users on the High Sierra’s successors, need to use them with full support.

There has not been any date set for the 32-bit apps to be defunct. The High Sierra will be the last version of the macOS that will support the 32-bit apps.

Apple is keen on developers using the latest hardware that will be compatible with the 64-bit technology. They want the macOS users to pressurize the developers to make the change from the 32-bit apps to the 64-bit apps when they see the alerts.

The macOS High Sierra 10.13.4 apps that are not updated to the 64-bit apps will get a one-time alert. This alerts the user that he is currently using the 32-bit technology and this will not be compatible in the future.

As of now, no date has been set regarding the transition to the 64-bit apps for macOS and macOS apps. It is advisable for the users to make sure they get the 64-bit version of their favorite apps.

How to check whether the apps are 32-bits or 64-bits?

The users need to go to ‘About this Mac’ and then click on ‘System Report’. You then scroll down to ‘Software’ and select ‘Applications’. If the ’64-bit (Intel) field says ‘Yes’, then the app is a 64-bit app and ‘No’ will indicate that it is a 32-bit app.

With regards to the iPhone, the 32-bit apps on the macOS have been completely phased out. There has been a transition to the 64-bit apps since Apple has control over the App Store.

The first 64-bit mobile processor was seen in the A7 in 2013. They had completely done away with the 32-bit apps in iOS 11.

Benefit of 64-bit apps

The latest versions of the Mac have the 64-bit technology and macOS which has the 64-bit apps can access more memory and also enable faster system performance. The current technologies such as Metal graphics acceleration work only with 64-bit apps.

Though Apple has not set the date for the transition to 64-bit apps, it has warned that the next macOS version will not run on 32-bit apps.

As can be seen with the iOS, their main aim is that the 32-bit apps on the macOS will not be supported. It is advisable for the users to either upgrade to the 64-bit apps or look for other solutions as soon as possible.

iOS Could Detect When You Hover Your Finger Over The Screen

iphone

iOS will know when you are hovering the finger upon the screen

Apple has brought the latest update to its iOS with much fan fare as it aimed towards enhancing the battery management along with slew of other tweaks. A report has emerged from the Apple offices that it has been actively working on adding new gesture controls for the iPhones. Apart from the range of normal touch gestures controls present on the iPhone now iOS will be to detect whether the users hovering the finger on the screen in order to trigger certain actions.

It is worth remembering that at the time of the launch of very first iPhone Jobs has remarkably spent quite a lot of time in showcasing the might of the multi-touch interface to the users. Touching screen by adding different level of pressure results in triggering different tasks and similarly swiping on either side of screen helps in getting different job done while the use of multiple finger in order to zoom in the photo or rotate were first seen implemented on the iPhone.

Changing the way people are interacting with their mobile screens

Apple has been a pioneer when it comes to bringing better controls and screen related functionalities to the core user experience. It is worth noting that Apple brought the famous 3D Touch gesture controls with the launch of the iPhone 6S. This features allowed users to triggers different by apply varying amount of pressure on their phone's screen. It allowed users to preview a photo or simply open an email or open the shortcut menu and much more.

These can seem like some simple touch screen enhancement performed by the Apple in the recent since the launch of the iPhone X which brought whole new range of gesture control never seen before on any smartphone. Apple also made a bold move to get rid of the staple home button which eventually made it necessary to offer advanced gesture based control for sublime user experience.

Next iPhone will be better than the before

With next generation iPhone this year Apple will bring the ability to detect the gestures right from above the screen. However there are no documents revealed by the Apple which points towards how it will be achieved on the next iPhones and some has even pointed out that features might not even debut in this year’s iPhone altogether. It has also been brought to the attention that Apple is also actively experimenting with the curved display for its upcoming iPhones.

Rather than being like the Samsung Galaxy premium devices Apple more likely want the iPhone to appear like a banana shape from top to the bottom. A number of rumors have suggested that Apple will be launching three new iPhone devices like the previous year. One of these devices will be next version of the trendsetter iPhone X followed by another iPhone X lookalike iPhone having a cheaper display while another one will be larger iPhone X for those who need larger display.

Can Apple Fix the iOS mess it has created?

iOS

Can Apple fix the mess it has created with iOS? Is the question of the moment. At first iOS used to be this great OS that helped you to get things done. It was sleek, fast, had a lot of features that were good at helping you get things done and the OS was steamlined. You could find the right thing in the right place with no hassle. But now iOS is not what it used to be. Now it has become a dish of trouble, with bugs, performance errors, stability issues and usability issues being the main ingredients.

It is even rumored that Apple is now putting on hold the many new features it has planned for iOS 12 just to correct the problems in iOS it has created. In the past, the few updates have all been about bug clearances and barely any new features and looks like this time around the next few updates might be the same. Well it is good and all that Apple wants to fix the bug issues because thast what some updates are supposed to do but what happens if such issues can’t be fixed?

Paying for a Premium product and stuck with the reality:

Apple has never been a-just-there-brand and what I mean by this is that it is a premium brand offering you premium service. Well in theory at least. They say you pay for what you get but recently this has not been the case.

Take a look at 2017, for example, it was the year of root bugs in macOS, it’s fix seems to have broken file sharing for some, updating your macOS to 10.13.1 seemed like a logical thing to do, well wrong, it rolled the root patch back, remote access was broken with a HomeKit bug in iOS 11.2 and the list goes on and on, but you get the picture.

Apple seems to be getting more bugs and their fixes upgraded than actually giving out any new features with their upgrades.

Ok Ok, I’m not here to trash Apple, bugs do happen and as products and their software become more and more complex there is a huge possibility of bugs coming up. In today’s fast paced world in order to keep up or set the pace as for other companies, upgrades, new features and software needs to come out and it often does so in a rushed up manner and this is bound to lead to bugs and their necessary fixes.

Four areas that iOS seems to be falling back on:

While Apple does offer you the best in tech when it comes to it, it still lacks in certain areas. While these areas may seem to be a small problem for some, for others it is a deal breaker. With frame drops and stuttering found in new hardware, apple seems to be missing out on performance standards.

Coming back to the bugs in iOS, you find them and then get it fixed until a new bug comes in its place or the fix itself gives you a new bug. Then stability, it is not the worst that is out there but for a high end product, we were certainly expecting a bit more and lastly, usability, is this really a thing now?

Apple is Ready to Fight Google Chromebooks with Cheaper iPads

ipad

Apple set to release cheaper iPads to counter the rise of Chromebooks

Apple has seen the reversal of the fortune with the rapid decline in the sales of the iPads and Mac laptops is last few years. In 2013 these reigned supreme in the schools in US by getting over the dominance of the Windows devices but in 2018 Apple iPads had simply lost its touch. Google Chromebook has made massive inroads in the US classrooms by becoming first choice for the students and Microsoft is also right behind it. Now Chromebook amounts for 60 percent of the devices sold in the US schools while iPads sales are steeply declining for three straight years. But Apple is gearing to bring back the challenge to the Chromebook by bringing a new lineup of cheaper iPads.

A low cost budget iPad is set to launch soon

This Tuesday Apple will be organizing a event focused on the special education which aims towards bringing "new creative ideas for the teachers and students". Industry wide rumors are hinting towards the launch of a low cost iPad at this event costing just about $259. The best thing about this budget iPad is that it will come with the support for a stylus. Apple Pencil support is available for the higher end iPad Pro versions which helps in boosting the productivity to the next level. Some rumors have even suggested that Apple might also release the cheaper budget version of the Macbook but doesn't happen to be the case.

It is worth noting that Apple has recently updated its main education website which 17 different devices pictures. Out of these 16 happened to be iPads and jus one Macbook. Furthermore a recent ad carried out by the Apple has asked the users boldly "What is a computer?" which indirectly hinted that the iPad will be the future of the computer in upcoming days. It is worth pointing out that Apple hasn’t had a golden run when it comes making a firm ground in the education segment. It got fined for $4.2 million in Los Angeles 2015 when it failed to provide iPads to the school kids with its lackluster $1 billion program.

Bringing the best of iOS to the students

Apple is a quick learner and has worked towards improving the functionality and features of the iOS and in turn iPad in order to lure the students. In the iOS version 9.3 Apple brought the multi-user support on the iPads and Apple even did away with the notorious Apple ID requirement in order to use the iPads. Thirdly Apple has even worked towards bringing better management tools for the iPads. All of these features were aimed towards grabbing the interest of the students and educator and push the sales of the iPads just like earlier days but rise in the iPads pricing has become a detrimental feature. A low cost budget iPad will be a masterstroke from Apple to regain the lost ground and bring a stiff challenge to the Google’s Chromebook.

Apple MacOS 10.13.4 Brings Full External GPU Support to Recent MacBooks

The newly released MacOS 10.13.4 not only adds support for external GPU but also adds business chat and a new security feature present in iOS 11.3. First announced by Apple in the WWDC held last year, Apple now works on that promise by bringing external GPU support to MacBooks with the improved MacOS 10.13.4 update.

The upgradeable external GPU with the MacOS update increasingly solves most problems when it came to professionals using MacBooks. As MacBooks moved more towards the customer end of the table, professionals like video editors, 3-D modelers, VR Developers and the like were left with often mediocre and un-upgradable GPUs which was a major setback for these kinds of professionals. Another major disadvantage was that these professionals were stuck using 15 inch MacBook models and the 12 inch MacBooks and the 13 inch MacBook Pros still relied on an integrated graphics card.

What’s great about the MacOS 10.13.4 update bringing external GPU support?

For those professionals who are video editors, 3-D modelers and the like, this MacOS 10.13.4 update brings in the necessary horse power without compromising on battery life, form factor and while also keeping the price of the MacBook models low for non- professional users.

What was the problem before MacOS 10.13.4 update?

Prior to the MacOS 10.13.4 update, many professionals had to add graphics cards to their systems but even adding a high end graphics card to their system gave mediocre results. While the external graphics card gave the necessary horse power and was excellent for gaming, it still felt as an add- on as compared to a seamless feature of the MacBook. Apart from this, users also complained of glitches and bugs even in popular games like FinalCut.

The new Thunderbolt 3 with MacOS 10.13.4:

With the new Thunderbolt’s 40 Gbps transfer rate and some other Apple updates, Professional users can now enjoy better external GBU support than before. Although these transfer rates are not the best that is out there, they still are capable when it comes to most uses. This solution is better for those who do not want to move over to other powerful PCs like Linux or Windows.

The Drawbacks:

As of now Apple only supports AMD graphics cards so getting support for the industry leading graphics card- GTX 1080 TI for example would need hacking and some other methods if you are to get around to using it. This still leaves the RX Vega 64 and some other cards that could provide amazing graphic capabilities without any support.

Besides not having support for non-AMD graphics cards and if you do decide to get one such card then you have to also think of getting a dedicated enclosure for it. The non- AMD graphics card as well as the enclosure for it are not going to come cheap and what makes it an even steeper buy is the fact that you would have already forked over quite a bit of money when it came to buying the MacBook in the first place.

Apple iOS 11.3 Update – What to Expect from the Major Upgrade

apple

Apple iOS 11.3 Finally Comes to the iPhone Today

iOS updates are both a time of rejoice and suspicion for the iPhone all over the world alike. The last major iOS update didn't went well with the users as Apple got embroiled in the controversy of slowing down the iPhone devices deliberately which didn't even came to notice for almost a year until a clever tech enthusiast blew the lid for Apple. iOS 11.3 promises more new features like every other major update but this time around Apple is looking forward to enhance the battery performance.

iOS 11.3 release date is just round the corner

Apple will be releasing the iOS 11.3 update on Tuesday March 27 on global scale. It will be made available on the iPad, iPhone and even the iPod Touch. The best thing about the release date of iOS 11.3 is that it is carefully planned to coincide with the "Let’s Take A Field Trip Event" where industry experts speculate that Apple will be launching first ever Budget iPad variant.

iOS 11.3 will also offers a new set of emoji along with an a unique option which allows users to boost teh iPhone performance to the next level. Now users will be able to fasten the performance of the iPhone in order to job done quickly than earlier by giving a simple tap on this every exquisite option.

Better performing Health app

iOS 11.3 version will boost the capability of the Apple Health app by allowing users to look through their medical records on the go. However the medical records availability is dependent on whether your medical institution is a partner of the ‘Apple Health’. In order to keep the user data secure Apple is encrypting the data with a passcode.

New AR experience for everyone

With iOS 11.3 is bringing the Augmented Reality features baked into its varied range of devices. Virtual Reality needs specific headgear in order to enjoy and interact with the virtual images but AR doesn't require any additional equipment. Rather users can enjoy the computer generated images on their real surroundings using the phone's camera.

The latest iOS 11.3 update will allow iPhone camera to recognize as well as virtual objects right on the vertical objects present in the real world like doors and walls. Secondly Apple has made some serious development in the recent times which allows iPhone to recognize 2D objects with greater perfection.

Keen to reduce the battery woes

Apple is finally doing something about the battery issue which plagues the iPhone for a really long time with iOS 11.3 update. Now iOS users will be able see their battery health and receive suggestion to improve the battery performance. iOS 11.3 will also give some genuine advice about taking the battery for service at Apple Store.

In order to make use of these features users are simply required to go to the Settings followed by selecting the option “Battery on an iPhone 6 or later”. Users can even check whether the iPhone’s power management feature is activated or not with the iOS 11.3 update.
