Apple Music or Spotify? Here’s How to Decide

Apple Music
Apple Music and Spotify are both good streaming services. Many of you already know which one you’ll be using. They both have the same essential features, the same sound quality and not much to complain about. But what about those who keep shifting from subscription to subscription, not knowing which will give them the best deal?

Will it be Spotify or Apple Music? Ultimately it is your money and you’ll be looking for the best place to spend it. So this article is the one for you.

You Might want to give Apple Music a Try if you have your own songs:

If you’re one of those types that prefer to listen to your own music or mixes over today’s music, then you’re better off using Apple Music. If you have your own bootlegs or personal mixes that are not possible to get on any streaming service then Apple Music is the one for you.

You may have some albums that have modified versions of songs that makes copyrighting them complex so many streaming services steer clear away from those songs. In these cases you’d be better downloading them form your CD onto iTunes which is pretty simple enough and then you can hear those songs on your phone as well. This is not to say you can’t do the same on Spotify as well but it’s just that it involves a whole lengthy process that is better avoided.

Using many Devices- use Spotify:

Apple Music may not have much wrong with it but when it comes to listening to music on multiple devices you may have to use Spotify. Apple Music is the same as it was years ago but on the other hand Spotify has much to offer and many new features added since those same years.

Spotify has an excellent desktop app that you can use to play music from and onto you Bluetooth speakers. With Spotify you can even play music from a web browser interface.

Apple Music works the same as well but just not as easily and smoothly as you might expect.

Looking for rare Songs get Apple Music:

Spotify claims to have over 30 million songs and Apple music claims to have over 40 million which does not mean that Apple Music is the better bet. When you go on to look for music you may get all you’re looking for on both streaming services but it might be that one song that crops up every once in a while that you don’t find and this could happen on either streaming service. It’s not like they both keep offering the exact same songs. Some might be different.

Coming back to the point Apple Music gets early releases of songs much faster than what Spotify does, mainly because of artists signing up with Apple first.

Better Radio on Apple Music:

Apple Music has a wide variety of radios- decade wise and genre wise, this means that you get all songs from a specific type in one place.

Spotify has radio stations but has songs that are limited to the same algorithms, which makes it hard to hear good songs that don’t fit into the bracket.

How to get started with Apple Music

Apple Music

Explore Apple Music to maximise on your Subscription

In order to get the maximum advantage from your subscription of Apple Music, you need to explore all the possibilities that is offered. Over the past three years the Apple Music service has grown, though there were bugs in the beginning.

Apple Music library has 45 million tracks to choose from.

The Apple Music is available on your Mac, Apple TV and iOS devices. By downloading anything you want from Apple Music, it becomes available wherever you go.

For the first-time users, Apple Music gives a confusing message like whether you want to Keep Music or Delete & Replace. Apple provides an explanation for the choices.

If you select Keep the Music, then the tunes that are present on your iPhone will remain there. In addition, you will get the choice of Apple Music.

The second option allows you to delete everything and replace it with copies from the Apple Music library.

It is better to choose Delete & Replace on your iPhone or iPad, while selecting Keep the Music on your Mac. These options ensure you get the best audio quality when you are on the go and also have a backup of your favourite tunes on your desk. Make sure to download the music on your iOS devices since you never know when you may need them especially during your commute.

How to explore Apple Music

There are five areas in Apple Music and navigating between them is done by using icons that are at the bottom of the mobile app. There is Apple Music: For You, Apple Music: New, Apple Music: Radio, Apple Music: Connect, Apple Music: Playlists and Library.

When should you download Apple Music?

It is advisable to mark the Apple Music track and copy it to your phone at least a few hours before. You also need to download it on the device from which you would be listening to.

Once you find a song on your iPhone, then you will get a button with an icon to the right of the sound track. If you tap the plus sign, the track from Apple Music will be added to your library. The plus sign then turns into the iCloud one with a download arrow. On tapping on it, that track gets downloaded. It is faster to do this for entire playlists than individual songs. When you go to the playlist on your iOS devices and tap Add then all the tracks on the playlist get added to your library. It will then change to the iCloud one with the download arrow. Tap on this and it will be downloaded.

There is also a button with ellipses which lets you add tunes to your library or to a playlist. Select Add to Library where the options increase with a download button wherein everything on that list will go onto the phone.

Once you stop subscribing to Apple Music then you will lose all the tracks that you have downloaded. There is a possibility of all your favourite tunes vanishing even if you are still subscribing. It may occur after an iOS update which may be due to offloading music when space is required. It can also happen if you have more than one iTunes account and you switch between them. You may lose your entire playlist when you go back to your original account.

In that case, go to Settings and Music and then switch on iCloud Music Library. You will be prompted to choose between Keep Music or Delete & Replace.

Subscription of Apple Music

Apple Music costs $9.99 per month or $14.99 for a family package of up to 6 people.

Apple Music for Android Updated with User Profiles and Voice Support

Apple Music
Apple is now rolling out the carpets for Apple music, an app that not only can be used on apple devices such as iphones, ipads and the like but also for android users.

So now even an android user can have access to a 30-million song catalogs and radio on beats one.

Apple ID

Apple music requires an apple id to use it. This app also serves as a social media platform allowing you to connect with your friends and see what their listening to and downloading. This app is like Spotify in certain ways.

Design of the Apple music app

Apple has combined the IOS and android features in coming up with the design for the app. The app comes up with a “hamburger” menu on the left, the term so coined because of the three horizontal lines that resemble a hamburger. The different options available are For you, radio, new, connect, my music tabs and playlists.

The general app other than the menu, resembles the previous IOS apps. In that it is jam packed with albums, songs and other suggestions.

The playlists of Apple music

The playlists are just like the previous ones. They allow you to listen to your downloads, purchases and that from CDs. You can even access music that is purchased from itunes. You can also listen to music across different devices using your same id and given that you download the app across all your devices.

The connect tab allows you to follow various artists and their updates.

Beats 1 Radio

The beats one option is apple’s private radio station. This station is available night or day. The app asks you what genres and artists you like when you sign up. This allows the app to custom make their offering to you by giving you various suggestions. As of now the app does not allow for videos, but apple says they will be coming shortly.

Voice control option in Apple music

As with any IOS device, the user can always access siri. But with android devices that does not exist. Apple music makes up for that by allowing you to access any song, artist or the radio by adding support for “Ok Google” voice commands. A simple test of “Ok Google, play beats radio in apple music” will work.

Family plan pack

As of now the app does not have a family plan pack that allows users to share a subscription. The apple music app comes with monthly subscription of $9.99 with a free three month trial period after which the amount will automatically be debited from your account.

Feed back Option in Apple music

The apple music app comes with a disclaimer that it is still in beta meaning that it is not quite done yet and may contain bugs and the occasional sluggishness. The app is only available for android devices running on 4.3 and up. The apple music app does not seem to be working on android tablets as of now.

Apple music app also gives a beta feedback option allowing the user to fill in a survey that pops open on a webpage. This allows you to let Apple know of any problems concerning the app.

The app does have its advantages though. It allows you to listen to music that can’t be found elsewhere such as Dr. Dre’s latest album and add to that the fact that now even an android user can also have access to itunes music on their phones which was otherwise not possible.
