Testing the iPad Third Generation (Wi-Fi, 32GB) - I

It is not called "iPad 3" but simply "iPad" with the third generation, Apple intends to redefine the category it created with the original iPad. "We have made improvements to the most fundamental aspects of the iPad while keeping everything that people liked the first iPad," said the Cupertino Company. Since the iPad is a large screen flanked by a large battery, these are the points that have been drastically improved, while retaining the strengths (and weaknesses) of IOS. Is it enough to redefine the concept of the iPad? The response in our test.

The A5X reveals its secrets

This has not missed, the processor A5X the new iPad was soon to be "dissected". The first observations of UBM TechInsights and Chipworks, who had already combed the A4 and A5, confirm that the A5X is a chip transition. The improvements are real, but not spectacular.

Like its predecessors, the A5X is always produced by Samsung and is 45 nm. In this regard, we recently learned that TSMC, which is supposed to produce the successors of the A5 processor knows the problems with its transition to a fine engraving of 28 nm. This problem occurred late last year may explain the conservative choice of Apple (read: Towards MacBook Pro 15 "without dedicated Nvidia graphics card?).

Presented on 7th of this month, the "new iPad" does not fundamentally change from its predecessor. From the outside, nothing has actually changed, or almost: the display still measures 9.7 inches, there is a white or black depending on the model, the home button is always present in front as well as the dock connector on the edge.

A new iPad eye on the Mac

Windows On ARM

Microsoft has caused a small earthquake when it announced that Windows 8 will be offered in a version compatible with ARM processors. Actually it's not the first time that Windows leaves the preserve of the x86 assembly: Windows NT has been proposed among other platforms Alpha, MIPS, PowerPC, and already in his time on ARM and Windows CE MIPS and ARM. However this is the first time that the "standard" version of Windows ventured outside the box of x86.

The iPad - a tablet of miracle

Since the marketing of the iPad, analysts are scratching their heads to bring the miracle tablet in their accounts. The iPad has to weigh it in the market share of computers? Tablet PC? Is there a separate category ("media tablet")? Is it different from a desktop or laptop?  With 5.2 million Macs and 15.43 million iPad sold on its last quarter record, Apple is by far the world's largest manufacturer of computers if the tablets were not aloof (Gartner estimates that HP has elapsed 14.7 million PCs in the last quarter).

There is the "scientific" definition of the computer, and the meaning we will actually use. There was a time when the lack of removable media (floppy disk, optical disk or other) was sufficient to disqualify the unit.

Author iBooks, heir to HyperCard

The new edition iBooks have a little deja vu. They have a lot to remember the CD-ROM encyclopedia and the cultural heyday of multimedia.

Killed by Internet, multimedia CD-ROM launched an entire industry that will really lived a short decade. Encyclopedias such as Encarta, but also more or less specialized titles such as the Louvre or The Anatomy Lesson, or true UFOs as Xplora and Eve by Peter Gabriel, or The Book of Lulu Roman Victor Pujebet: these to digital works that were the "good book" were editing.

Test of Author iBooks

Kind of mixture between Pages (€ 15.99), Keynote (€ 15.99), and iWeb, Author iBooks) is a new application designed to create books electronic interactive WYSIWYG. Is it as easy to use as Apple claims? Does it really create rich, interactive books? If it is powerful, but free, there is something to hide? The response in our test! Case study: creating a "history of Apple"

With OS X Lion: first steps and iOS 5: first steps, we had the opportunity to lay out several digital books. To do this, we used conventional tools: writing XHTML code in an editor, assembled in Sigil, with ePub Validation Check and Book Proofer, submission to iTunes Producer.

Overview of iBooks Author - II

Once obtained the desired result, Author iBooks can test it before publishing it. For this, the application does not use the simulator for the iPad, but an iPad. A "Preview" button to generate a version and open it directly on the tablet from Apple.

Good idea but the implementation is quite restrictive since it is necessary not only to connect the iPad Mac with a USB cable, but leave open the terminal iBooks. IBooks you can add it to iTunes and sync with other iPad. It will also create a PDF file, which is convenient because universal, but much more limited in terms of interactivity. Author iBooks can also change the look of the book in both directions.

Author iBooks is Apple's solution to quickly and easily interactive textbooks. What is the solution in practice? If you know of Pages (€ 15.99) or Keynote (€ 15.99), you will not be disoriented by opening the application for the first time. "Inside Apple" culture of secrecy in Cupertino

A few anecdotes about the secrecy introduced at Apple have been published by the author of "Inside Apple" on sale next week.

Adam Lashinsky discusses some original practices, such as when any new project starts, and others who may ring familiar to some readers as working in companies governed by strict rules of confidentiality.

The author, who has met with former Apple employees, for example, says that some have seen a sudden one day be erected walls to their floor and doors put "windows were pacified and some pieces had none”. New access rules are enacted, and nothing enters or leaves the room without good reason. A rule of silence that covers course and especially outside the workplace. Friends and family are also kept in the dark. Phill Schiller, the head of marketing, said subject themselves to the discipline with his children while Apple was working on his future gadgets.

PC: the decline is accelerating

There was a time not so long ago when the holiday season alone was able to revive PC sales. But the personal computer is becoming increasingly rare in the hood of Santa Claus. Result, PC sales have stagnated in the fourth quarter. Exactly, they were down 0.17%. The PC head in the bucket since the second quarter and this trend seems heavy. A year finally sign the decline of this unit has taken a hit since the democratization of old tablets and smartphones.
